We woke up well before dawn and left Tallahassee, driving east into the sunrise. In Alachua we dropped off Totto at the Airstream dealership for some small repairs. Then we drove on to Gainesville, where we’ll be spending the week. Our Airbnb is on a quiet street that dead-ends at a boardwalk that winds through a swampy place called Loblolly Nature Park. We changed into shorts and explored it right away.
In the evening after work we went to Ward’s grocery for pasta supplies and then caught the sunset at the bat houses at Lake Alice on UF campus. There were many people lined up against the wooden fence, and as soon as the sun was gone the bats all came out. An impressive hawk snatched one out of the air as if it did this every night.
It felt perfect outside, and for the first time we realized we were truly on our own, we felt new, fresh, and alive, realizing that finally our home is wherever we decide to be.
